FAQ

Stump Grinding: Common Questions

What is stump grinding and how does it work?

Stump grinding uses a rotating cutting disk to chip the stump and surface roots down 6–12 inches below grade. The resulting wood chips can be used as mulch or hauled away. The hole fills in naturally over time.

How deep does stump grinding go?

Standard grinding goes 6–12 inches below ground level — deep enough to plant grass over the spot. Deeper grinding is available if you plan to pour concrete or install a structure.

Will the stump grow back after grinding?

In most cases, no. Grinding removes the structural wood that stores the energy needed to re-sprout. Some species (like silver maple and tree of heaven) may send up root sprouts — we can advise on follow-up treatment if needed.

Can I add stump grinding to a tree removal?

Yes — and it is the most convenient option. We can grind the stump on the same visit as tree removal. Ask us to include it in your estimate.
